10 Top Tips for ‘getting a new job’
The old ways of getting a job are different nowadays. The internet has changed a lot. The competition for jobs is higher than ever. And unemployment in a lot of countries is at an all-time high. There are 10 ways that you can without any doubt significantly improve your chances of being called in for an interview, and then most importantly hearing the words:
“Congratulations, you are the successful candidate for this position…”
1. Linkedin profile
Make it outstanding or you won’t be noticed
According to studies, the large majority of recruiters look at a candidate’s linkedin profile in the selection procedure before even being called in for an interview. Aspects such as having a professional photo, headlines, the language used and recommendations are all significant indicators of the candidate’s status.
2. Everything in English
All Resumes, CV’s, cover letters, Linkedin profiles etc should be written in perfect English for all international vacancies. Spelling mistakes are not forgiven; proofread several times. Clarity is king! Keep trying to reduce what you are trying to say in as few words as possible so that everything is straight to the point..Don’t go on and on…only include the most important information. Find a professional in this area if you need fine tuning. This will be money well spent!
3. Target your resume for the job – Don’t try and sell steak to a vegetarian!
Too often people get lazy when applying for many jobs and use the same resume for all applications. This is a big mistake, it doesn’t work! More time taken in preparation of streamlining your CV in line with the vacancy, the higher your chances of being noticed are and of being taken as a serious candidate.
4. Don’t include your entire experience on your CV
If you are applying for a job at any international company or organisation in the financing sector or in the engineering field etc, is it really that important to write that you worked at McDonalds when you were younger? NO. Remember, less is more!
5. Preparation is 90% of success. Preparation is key. Period. More preparation equals higher chances of landing the job. Practice practice practice.
6. Ask for feedback
Don’t be afraid! Ask for advice about every aspect of your job search. Ask family, friends and colleagues what they think about your cover letters, CV, answers to possible questions, the language used etc. Sometimes we get so caught up in the story in our heads that an outside point of view can be extremely helpful and eye opening.
7. Your English needs to be sufficient
If you’re not a native English speaker then you better do something about learning the right language for this job hunting process. Look for resources online, find a private teacher or join a language course specifically oriented around using English effective for the job market i.e. Business English or English for Work.
8. Do something different if you keep failing
Only a fool makes the same mistake twice. If you have been rejected more than a few times then something is wrong. Realise this. STOP. Something has to change and you need to identify this quickly. Often this is right under our noses but we just can’t see it. That’s why no.7 above is absolutely crucial.
9. Learn how to sell yourself
If you find it difficult to talk about yourself then you have already lost the battle. Understand that the interview process is a performance of some kind, so you better get used to it fast. Simply saying that ‘I’m the best person for this job is because I have a lot of experience’ is just not going to cut it!!!
Going from no job to the job of your dreams or even just getting a job so that you can get by requires work. It requires strategic thinking, it requires patience, it requires time and energy, it requires ambition & motivation…most important is to know the process of the job market in today’s economy. Take everything step by step and don’t skim over any detail.
